Open Water PADI Certification

Context

I earned my PADI Open Water Diver certification in the Cayman Islands in the summer of 2024, when I was 12 years old. The course involved shallow ocean sessions to learn and practice basic skills, followed by ocean dives to apply everything in real conditions. There was a theory component, a paper quiz administered by the instructor to test our knowledge. After passing that, we completed a series of practice dives, and then four open-water dives to finalize the certification. Once that was done, I received my certificate. Since then, I've continued diving each year all over the world to keep the skills fresh and gain more experience underwater.

What I learned

I learned the theory behind scuba diving, how pressure affects your body, how to plan a dive, and what to do if something goes wrong. That was tested with a paper quiz from the instructor. Then I got into the water and learned the practical skills: how to clear a flooded mask, find and recover my regulator if it got knocked out, control my buoyancy so I'm not floating up or sinking down, equalize my ears on the way down, and share air with a buddy in an emergency. All of that came together during the four open-water dives, where I had to apply everything in real ocean conditions. Once I passed both the quiz and the dives, I got my certification. Since then, I've kept diving each year, which has helped me stay comfortable and keep improving underwater.
